How To Find The Cheapest Flights By Google Flights
Smart, frugal vacationers know two things: where to look for the best deals on hotels and flights. Here, we’ll outline a foolproof plan for always finding affordable plane tickets.
The ideal time to purchase plane tickets across the ocean is not determined by any strict rule.
However, there are a few broad tendencies to keep in mind while searching for low-cost airline tickets.
Expect the highest rates during the peak travel period (summer and holiday weekends). However, there are ways to increase your chances of a successful purchase.
After looking at data from 560 million passenger searches, the researchers concluded that seven weeks out was the sweet spot for booking domestic flights. Some have found that making plans 3-7 weeks in advance is optimal.
The WORST time to book a flight was 14 days before departure, and the BEST time was more than 5 months in advance.
The study found that the optimal time to purchase tickets for an international flight was 11-12 weeks before departure. They also claim that the idea that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to shop is an urban legend, and that any given day of the week is just as good.
Want to know when the best deals on plane tickets can be found?
Even if you’re flexible about when you buy your tickets, picking a specific day of the week to fly can significantly reduce your airfare costs.
Season: From the end of July through the beginning of September, flight costs to and from the United Kingdom skyrocket. Since this is the time when most children are free from school, airlines charge exorbitant rates, knowing that their customers have no choice but to pay.
Flight prices in the United States are typically more expensive around major holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July.
Most people agree that Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the best days to take a flight. On these days, airlines typically transport fewer business travelers than usual, resulting in lower fares and an excess of seats. We also like these days because you have a better chance of snagging a frequent flyer seat.
Typically, fares are higher on Fridays and Sundays.
And don’t think for a second that buying your ticket on a specific day will get you a better fare. That has nothing to do with the day you actually take to the air.
It has been suggested that you mix and match the following:
Local flights typically leave on Saturday and return on Monday.
If you’re traveling internationally, you should leave on a Tuesday and get back on a Wednesday.
♦ Do: If you want to find the best deals on airfare (and lodging), you need to plan ahead, use the advice in this article, and be patient. Make the necessary arrangements for time off from work. You probably plan to fly during the week.
If you truly want to save money when booking your flights for any vacation or long term trip, you need to get on board (pun intended) with mastering search engines.
An aggregator (like Skyscanner), for the purposes of this explanation, is a search engine. Airline tickets are not available from Skyscanner. Instead, to find the best flights for your dates and route, Skyscanner will search booking sites, online travel agencies (OTAs), and additional search engines.
You will be transferred to an external site (the online travel agency or booking site, such as Kiwi, gotogate, cheap tickets, last minute, etc.) when you click a flight, where you can make a ticket purchase.
Momondo is now both an aggregator and an online ticket seller (OTA), having previously only served as an aggregator.
When you enter London to New York, for instance, Skyscanner or Momondo search through all the available resources to present you with a list of options. Aggregators charge a small referral fee for the work the travel agency performs on your behalf.
There are better search engines than others. Better because they consistently provide you with lower flight prices, additional filtering options, and more user-friendly features.
The best price should always be sought after before purchasing airline tickets.
One of the platforms will feel easier to use as you start using them, so you’ll end up using it as your starting point.
We personally use Skyscanner almost exclusively to book our flights. At the very least, we compare flight prices on Momondo to those found on Skyscanner as a benchmark.
If you’ve never used Skyscanner before, we’ll quickly walk you through a fundamental search so you can follow the Actions in our sections on finding cheap flights.
If it isn’t already set correctly, open skyscanner.com and select your language and currency (top right).
The search box will be there, with the options Round Trip, One Way, and Multi City. In each tip section, we’ll explain which of those to pick.
The ‘From’ and ‘To’ fields are extremely flexible and can be filled with any country, city, or airport, which is very useful.
Another very helpful tool is the ability to choose the departure and arrival dates by “Specific Date” or “Whole Month.”
passengers and road users Unless otherwise specified, you will always choose 1 traveler and economy (because you are looking for the cheapest flights!).
So, to begin a fundamental search: Choose One-Way Flights From New York To London, Departing Throughout the Month of April, 1 Adult Economy, and Click Search Flights!
A list with all of the dates in April, along with green, orange, and red dots with prices, will appear.
This information displays the cost of airline tickets from New York to London for each day in April.
Select any of them, then click Show Flights.
A list of available flights is displayed, sorted by Skyscanner’s algorithm for maximizing value over time.
You can choose to display options ranked best-to-cheapest-to-fast.
To see every flight option for that specific route on that specific day, scroll down the list.
We choose Skyscanner when prices are comparable because we find it to be the most user-friendly.
If you live in or are visiting the US, you should be aware that Southwest Airlines does not permit any third party flight search engines to display their flights. The requirement to book directly is, to put it mildly, annoying. However, they do offer free baggage and competitive prices, so it is worthwhile to visit the Southwest website.
• Major Pros: Consistently low prices, search by month function allows you to visualize cheapest flights in any month. Search by whole country function is incredibly useful (most only offer city or even specific airport).
• Other Pros: Easy to use, works best for flexible searches, price alerts, change currency and language, sorts by ‘best’, ‘cheapest’ and ‘fastest’ flight options, search by everywhere is travel inspiration heaven.
• Cons: Sometimes prices aren’t real-time accurate on search by month function.
Significant Advantage: Impressive visuals and consistently low prices.
Additional benefits include a trendy design, a wide range of options, including buses and trains upon request, and a display of the “best” and “cheapest” choices. Has a similar “Explore” map feature to Google Flights and loads real-time prices for one-way searches up to three days either side of the selected date.
Cons: You can only search by date within the next three days, and you must make separate reservations if you want to book flights between multiple cities on various airlines. The cheapest option when looking for flights, say from Paris to Rome, is on a.fr website, and the reservation site is also in French.
Open a new tab on Momondo while keeping Skyscanner open for the next step.
The structure of Momondo and Skyscanner’s basic search fields are similar.
Step 1. Enter your home airport on Google Flights
Head to Google Flights and enter your originating airport. If you live near more than one, you can enter up to five. For this example, I’ll use my home airport of Cincinnati.
Don’t enter a destination airport. You can enter your desired dates, but if you’re flexible, there’s no need. Don’t pay attention to those boxes.
Step 2. Search with the destination blank
The destination box says “Where to?” If you click on that box, you’ll be presented with a list of broad destinations (like Europe, United States, etc.) Don’t enter anything into the box — just click “Search.”
Step 3. Select dates
A map now appears with prices for flights from my home airport to various destinations around the U.S. Click on the dates located in the top left corner of the page. You’ll see two tabs:
Click “Flexible dates.”
Step 4. Choose flexible dates
Depending on how flexible you want to be, you can either select the month you want to travel or just “All.” The second option will look for every flight over the following six months. This is the choice I favor using. I’ll plan my PTO around the deal, regardless of when it happens if it’s good enough.
There are three trip length options available when looking for a round-trip flight: weekend, one week, or two weeks. This is somewhat limiting, but if you search for one-way flights, you are not required to select a trip length.
Step 5. Lower the maximum ticket price
Drag the price filter to the left on the page to find the destinations that are by far the cheapest. By doing this, you will eliminate the competition for more expensive flights and be left with only the startlingly affordable ones. You can see that I can get a round-trip flight from Cincinnati to Charleston, New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and more for less than $100.
The details for each flight are displayed on the map to the left of the page. You can see the airline and the dates that are covered by this price.
Step 6. Search international flights (hubs preferred)
You can also enlarge the map significantly to see the entire planet at once. You’ll be astonished at the sporadic deals that appear from your home airport when you search with open dates. Be aware that searching from your closest international hub airport will probably result in cost savings if you plan to book an international flight. Personally, I prefer to conduct searches from nearby international gateways like Chicago. For instance, there are a ton of coach flights to Europe that cost less than $400!
The left side of the page will display a list of all the flights that are currently available after you click on the desired destination. Once more, Google will inform you of the most affordable dates. Just watch out for low-cost airlines that extort outrageous fees for things like carry-on luggage and seat selection. If you can’t travel light, you might find that the fees you incur exceed the cost of your airfare. Here is Allegiant, a budget airline that provides a $84 round-trip fare to Key West. There is a minimum fee of $20 for carry-on bags and a minimum fee of $35 for checked bags each way.
If you repeatedly search for a flight in your web browser and believe the price has changed, you are not insane. Flight prices do rise when a specific route is repeatedly searched, according to cookies in your browser, as the website tries to scare you into booking the flight quickly before prices rise even further. To see the best deals, always search for flights in incognito or private browsing mode.
By pressing Command (or “Control” if using a PC), Shift, “N” in Google Chrome or Safari, incognito is turned on. Press Command (or “Control” if using a PC), Shift, “P” to launch Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. Your information won’t be tracked in the new browser window that will be opened as a result, preventing price inflation as you search. A reminder that if you’re using an older version of OS X, open Safari, choose “Private Browsing” from the menu that appears, and then click “Safari” again.
Every time you reopen an incognito window, your cookies are reset. Close all of your incognito windows, open a new one, and then conduct your flight search if you want to start each flight search from scratch (in order to prevent your previous searches from “remembering” and potentially inflating costs).
However, try to avoid flying up to 7 days before or after a significant holiday. However, there are some tactics you can use to save money, like booking a flight for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even September 11 (when the flight attendants are extra nice).
Likewise, we are all familiar with the term “tourist season”.
Summer is the busiest travel season in Europe. Instead, think about going during the slower seasons. Sure, it might be a little cooler, but there won’t be as many people waiting in line at popular attractions, and flights and lodging will cost less.
If you are unable to change the date of your flight, experiment with the time of day you decide to fly because this can have a significant impact on the cost of your airline ticket.
You have a better chance of obtaining the best deal if you fly on an off-peak day or time, such as the red-eye or early in the morning. The cheapest flights typically depart either very early in the morning or very late at night.
One of our top suggestions for finding low-cost flights anywhere is to use the Internet.
Consider flying to a location where cheap flights are already available rather than picking a destination and then searching for flights for days or weeks!
Pick a place you can afford and that you’ll enjoy going to. Use a search engine for flights like Skyscanner, which enables you to enter your departure city and look for a list of inexpensive flights to any destination worldwide. These are useful tools that are entertaining to play around with if you are flexible about where you want to go.
Long ago, travelers learned a trick that is now known as “hidden city” flights. In a nutshell, sometimes it is less expensive to connect in a city than to fly there directly. Instead of taking the continuing connection, you book that inexpensive flight with a stopover in the city you want to go to.
It should be obvious that this is risky for a variety of reasons. Here are some things to think about:
Your checked luggage may continue to the final location. For this reason, it’s best to only bring carry-on luggage when using hidden city tickets.
If the same plane is continuing to its destination, you might not be able to get off.
Airlines might find out that you missed your connection. It’s difficult to predict the effects of this, especially given how frequently flights are missed.
A search engine on the internet now finds hidden city tickets for you. United Airlines, which was enraged by this questionable hack, even filed a lawsuit against it under the name Skiplagged. Although I know a few people who have used the hidden city strategy and were successful in making some frugal savings, we have never used it. At your own risk, use!
Consider whether the price would be lower if paid in a different currency before making a flight reservation. Budget airlines frequently require you to pay in the local currency of the nation from which you are departing, but this isn’t always the case. A crucial reminder when doing this: use a credit card without foreign transaction fees, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, or else your attempts to save money will be futile! You can find the best credit cards for travel by consulting our article on money matters for globetrotters.
